Hummingbirds are one of the smallest variety of bird species, but they are mighty! Weighing about as much as a marshmallow, these birds can navigate up, down, forward and backwards with their powerful wings. They are incredibly fast, with some reaching speeds of 50 miles per hour! The Rufous hummingbird (the orange one on our design!) has one of the largest migratory areas reaching from Mexico to Washington state. Their status is of concern here in North America due to climate change, invasive species, and food source decline.
More varieties featured on our shirt are the Calliope, Costas, and Broad Tailed hummingbirds of North America, all which are officially in the least concern status currently, but there are many risk factors for them that may cause population decline in the near future. The Santa Marta Sabrewing hummingbird of northern Columbia is also included here; this species is Critically Endangered and is one of the rarest hummingbirds to be seen (its the blue/green one in our design here!)
